Mileage Still Matters – Here Is Why
With petrol prices hovering above Rs. 100 per litre in many Indian cities, fuel economy is not just a bonus feature — it is a necessity. For someone who covers 30 to 50 kilometres daily, even a difference of 3–4 km/litre can mean saving Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 8,000 every month. Over a year, that is nearly one lakh rupees in your pocket.
This is why when choosing a car under 10 lakhs in India, mileage remains one of the top priorities for buyers. Let us look at which cars deliver the best real-world fuel efficiency without burning a hole in your pocket upfront.
Top Mileage Cars Under 10 Lakhs in India
1. Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 – This small car punches well above its weight when it comes to fuel economy. ARAI-certified mileage is around 24.39 km/litre. For city use, expect 18–20 km/litre in real conditions. At a starting price of around Rs. 3.99 lakh, it is also the most affordable car on this list.
2. Maruti Suzuki Celerio – The Celerio is known for its impressive CNG variant which delivers around 35.6 km/kg. Even the petrol version gives solid mileage of over 26 km/litre (ARAI certified). It is available under Rs. 7 lakh for most variants.
3. Tata Tiago – Tata has significantly improved fuel efficiency in the Tiago. The CNG variant delivers around 26.49 km/kg. The petrol engine is also decently efficient at around 19–21 km/litre in real use.
4. Hyundai Exter – This newer entrant in the micro-SUV segment offers a good balance of mileage and features. The CNG version is particularly economical and fits comfortably under 10 lakhs.
5. Maruti Suzuki WagonR CNG – The WagonR CNG is one of India’s most popular budget cars. The running cost is extremely low, making it a favourite among cab drivers and budget-conscious families alike.
Real-World Mileage vs ARAI Figures – Know the Difference
Every car advertisement shows ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) certified mileage figures. These are tested under controlled lab conditions and almost never reflect real-world driving. In actual traffic conditions — stop-and-go city driving, air conditioning use, full passenger load — you typically get 15–25% less than the ARAI number.
So if a car claims 24 km/litre ARAI, expect 18–20 km/litre in reality. When comparing cars for mileage, always check owner reviews and real-world test results on platforms like CarDekho or Team-BHP. These give you a much more honest picture of what to expect.
Automatic Variants and Their Effect on Mileage
Many buyers in 2025 prefer automatic or AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) cars, especially in cities where traffic jams are a daily struggle. The good news is that modern AMT gearboxes are quite fuel-efficient.
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio AGS (Auto Gear Shift) and Tata Tiago AMT are both available under 8 lakhs and give reasonable mileage even in city driving. If you want a fully automatic option, look at the Maruti Swift AMT or Hyundai Grand i10 Nios AT, though the latter can push slightly above 8 lakhs for automatic variants.
Do note that in general, automatic cars tend to give slightly lower mileage than their manual counterparts. But the convenience factor often outweighs the minor fuel cost difference for city commuters.
Should You Go CNG?
If you live in a metro city and have easy access to CNG stations, going the CNG route is financially very smart. The upfront cost difference is usually Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 90,000 more than the petrol version, but you recover that within 12 to 18 months through lower running costs.
However, keep in mind that CNG takes up boot space, refueling takes longer, and not all highways have CNG stations. Evaluate your driving pattern before making the decision.
