Green Cars Are No Longer Just for the Rich
A few years ago, buying an electric car meant spending 15–20 lakhs minimum. CNG cars were limited to a handful of models, mostly in metros. But 2025 has changed a lot. There are now genuine electric and CNG options under the 10-lakh price bracket that make practical sense for everyday Indian buyers.
The Indian government’s push for cleaner mobility, combined with rising petrol prices, has accelerated the shift. If you are planning to buy a car under 10 lakhs in India and you care about running costs, you owe it to yourself to at least evaluate CNG and EV options.
Best CNG Cars Under 10 Lakhs in India
1. Maruti Suzuki WagonR CNG – One of the most popular CNG cars in India. The factory-fitted CNG kit gives you peace of mind about safety and warranty. Running cost can be as low as Rs. 1.5–2 per kilometre in cities with good CNG infrastructure. Available in variants starting under Rs. 7 lakh.
2. Tata Tiago CNG – Tata’s CNG option in the Tiago is well-engineered and reliable. It also retains the Tiago’s 4-star safety rating, which makes it one of the safest budget CNG cars available.
3. Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG – With an impressive ARAI-certified range of around 35 km/kg, the Celerio CNG is excellent for high-mileage drivers. Available under Rs. 8 lakh for most variants.
4. Hyundai Exter CNG – Hyundai launched the Exter with a CNG option, making it one of the few micro-SUVs with factory CNG. It offers a good feature list along with low running costs.
5. Maruti Suzuki Swift CNG – The Swift CNG is a newer addition and combines the Swift’s sporty looks with the economy of CNG. Great for young professionals who drive a lot in cities.
Electric Cars Under or Around 10 Lakhs
Truly affordable electric cars under 10 lakhs are still rare in India, but a few options exist or are close to this price:
Tata Tiago EV – The Tiago EV starts at around Rs. 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base variant, making it the most affordable new electric car you can buy in India right now. The range is around 250 km (claimed), which is adequate for city use. It is a proper electric car, not a golf cart, and it comes with fast charging support.
PMV EaS-E and similar micro-EVs – There are small city EVs in the market priced under Rs. 5 lakh. These are extremely small, low-speed vehicles best suited for gated communities, short runs, or elderly drivers. They are not highway-capable.
For most Indian buyers who want an EV for daily commuting of 30–50 km per day, the Tiago EV is the most practical choice under 10 lakhs.
CNG vs Electric – Which Is Smarter for Indian Buyers?
Both have their merits. CNG infrastructure is more developed across India, making long-distance travel easier. CNG cars also have no range anxiety and can be refueled quickly. However, boot space is compromised, and CNG is not available everywhere in rural India.
Electric cars have near-zero running costs (Rs. 1 or less per km at home charging rates), no clutch or gear changes, and very low maintenance. But charging infrastructure is still developing outside metros, and apartments without dedicated parking may face charging difficulties.
Our suggestion: if you live in Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, or Pune with access to CNG stations near your home or office, CNG is a smart economic choice. If you have a parking space with a power outlet and drive mostly in the city, the Tiago EV is worth considering seriously.
Long-Term Savings – A Quick Estimate
Let us do a quick calculation. If you drive 40 km per day and 300 days a year, that is 12,000 km annually.
Petrol car at Rs. 5/km: Rs. 60,000 per year on fuel
CNG car at Rs. 1.8/km: Rs. 21,600 per year on fuel
Electric car at Rs. 0.8/km: Rs. 9,600 per year on charging Over 5 years, a CNG car saves you roughly Rs. 1.9 lakh over petrol. An EV saves you over Rs. 2.5 lakh. The math strongly favours green options if you drive regularly.
