Mahindra Scorpio 2022 Review: 12 Months ofReal-World Ownership — The Honest Verdict

The Mahindra Scorpio 2022 arrived with enormous hype. Five-star safety ratings, powerful engines, a premium cabin — on paper, it seemed almost too good to be true for its price. But how does it actually hold up after a year of daily driving, highway runs, and the occasional dirt trail? This review is based on real ownership experience — not a press drive, not a spec-sheet reading.

We have driven the Scorpio-N Z8 Diesel MT for over 18,000 kilometres across urban commutes, long highway stretches, and moderate off-road trails. Here is everything you need to know before putting down your money.

First Impressions: Does It Still Turn Heads?

The answer is a loud yes. The Mahindra Scorpio 2022 commands attention on Indian roads in a way very few vehicles can. The wide stance, 18-inch alloy wheels, and LED headlamps make it look far more expensive than its price tag suggests. Parking it next to a Tata Safari or Hyundai Creta, it looks like it belongs in a different — and higher — league.

Build quality at first glance is solid. Panel gaps are consistent, the paint finish is deep and even, and the doors shut with a satisfying thud. The overall sense of solidity is one of the Scorpio-N’s strongest initial impressions.

Ride Quality: The Honest Truth

Let us start with what most reviews dance around. The Mahindra Scorpio 2022 has a characteristically firm ride, especially at low speeds on broken urban roads. The body-on-frame platform and leaf spring rear suspension do not absorb small, sharp bumps the way a monocoque sedan would. Over potholes and speed breakers, there is a noticeable thump that filters into the cabin.

However, above 60 km/h on smooth tarmac, the ride transforms. The Scorpio-N settles beautifully, body roll is well-controlled, and high-speed stability is genuinely impressive for a ladder-frame SUV. On highways, it is one of the most relaxed and capable long-distance vehicles in its segment.

The verdict: firm in city, excellent on highways. If your daily commute involves mostly smooth roads and occasional rough patches, you will adapt quickly. If you live in a city with particularly bad roads, it demands some getting used to.

Engine Performance: The 2.2L Diesel in Daily Use

The 2.2L mHawk diesel is this vehicle’s strongest attribute. It delivers its 400 Nm of torque low in the rev range, which means overtaking is effortless, and climbing inclines — whether a highway flyover or a mountain slope — requires minimal effort. The engine is refined for its class, though diesel clatter is audible at idle.

The 6-speed manual gearbox has a slightly heavy clutch pedal that takes about a week to get comfortable with. Gear shifts are positive and precise. On long highway drives, the engine settles into a smooth cruise at 100-120 km/h with revs sitting comfortably below 2,500 rpm — contributing to its impressive fuel efficiency.

Fuel Efficiency After 18,000 km

ARAI certified mileage for the Diesel MT is 16.95 km/l. In our experience: city driving in heavy traffic averaged 11.2 km/l. Mixed city-highway use returned 13.5-14 km/l. Pure highway driving at 90-100 km/h consistently gave 15.5-16.5 km/l. These numbers are genuinely strong for a 1,900+ kg SUV. Over 18,000 km, the engine has shown no degradation in performance or fuel efficiency.

Cabin Quality: Premium or Pretending?

The interior of the Mahindra Scorpio 2022 punches above its price in most areas. The chocolate brown leatherette upholstery looks and feels premium, wipes clean easily, and has not shown premature wear. The 8-inch AdrenoX touchscreen is responsive and the wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity works flawlessly.

The Bose audio system (Z8 and above) is genuinely excellent — one of the best factory-fitted systems available under Rs. 20 lakh. Noise isolation has improved over older Scorpio generations, though tyre roar and wind noise are noticeable above 110 km/h.

Third-row practicality is where reality tempers expectations. Adults can sit in the third row for short trips, but it is primarily suitable for children or adolescents on longer journeys. The second row, however, is genuinely spacious and comfortable for three adults.

After 12 Months: Ownership Costs

The first service (5,000 km) cost approximately Rs. 3,800. The 10,000 km service was around Rs. 7,200. The 15,000 km service involved an air filter replacement and came to Rs. 9,500. Total service cost over 18,000 km: approximately Rs. 21,000. That is a reasonable figure for a vehicle of this size and capability. Mahindra’s service network in tier-1 and tier-2 cities is adequate, though response times can vary.

Pros and Cons — After Real Ownership

What Works Really Well

  • Diesel engine — torque-rich, fuel-efficient, and durable
  • Highway stability and long-distance comfort at speed
  • 5-star safety credentials giving genuine peace of mind
  • Bose audio and technology features for the price
  • Resale value — Scorpio brand holds value exceptionally well in India
  • 4WD capability (top variants) is genuinely capable off-road

What Could Be Better

  • City ride quality over very broken roads is stiff
  • Heavy clutch pedal requires adjustment period
  • Third row is adults-not-recommended for long distances
  • Wind noise above 110 km/h is noticeable
  • Touchscreen lag occasionally noticed in cold starts

Should You Buy the Mahindra Scorpio 2022?

After 12 months and 18,000 kilometres, the answer is a confident yes — with clear-eyed expectations. The Mahindra Scorpio 2022 is not a luxury SUV masquerading as a value product. It is a genuinely capable, well-engineered, safety-certified SUV that delivers far more than its price suggests. If you want a vehicle that is equally at home on a Mumbai expressway and a Himalayan trail, this is one of the finest options in India under Rs. 25 lakh.

The SUV rewards drivers who understand and respect its body-on-frame character. It is not meant to feel like a crossover. It is meant to feel like a proper SUV — and in that role, the Mahindra Scorpio 2022 is exceptional.
